Abstraction in Latin America: Rio de la Plata

July 16, 2018

The CPPC’s 2016 gift to MoMA of modernist works of art from Latin America comprises a microcosm of the history of abstraction. From the Uruguayan painter Joaquín Torres-García’s recognition of the roots of abstraction in ancient art to the liberation of painting from the frame by painters such as Rhod Rothfuss, Juan Melé and Raúl Lozza in Argentina, the donation represents a spectrum of the artists and movements concerned with abstraction in the Southern Cone.
