Bernardo José de Souza

Bernardo José de Souza is a curator, professor, and art critic. He is currently Artistic Director of Fundação Iberê Camargo. From 2005–2013, he was Coordinator of Cinema, Video and Photography at the Municipal Secretariat of Culture of Porto Alegre, and he was part of the curatorial team for the 9th Mercosul Biennial (Porto Alegre, 2013). Since then, he has developed curatorial projects which include: the exhibition To See What is Coming at Largo das Artes (Rio de Janeiro, 2014); the 19th Contemporary Art Festival SESC_Videobrasil (São Paulo, 2015);  the exhibition A Mão Negativa at Parque Lage (Rio de Janeiro, 2015); the special project Através do Espelho at ArtRio (Rio de Janeiro, 2015); the exhibition Tudo o que É Sólido Desmancha no Ar at the Galeria Jaqueline Martins (São Paulo, 2015); the program Crossings and Passages at Googman Gallery (Cape Town, 2016); the exhibition Vivemos na Melhor Cidade at Átomos (Rio de Janeiro, 2016); and the program Arte e Ativismo na América Latina – Prince Claus Fund/Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs at Despina (Rio de Janeiro, 2016 and 2017).

De Souza graduated from the PUCRS in Social Communications and was a Specialist in Photography and Fashion at the University of the Arts London . From 2006–2013, he was professor of undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the following universities: PUCRS, ESPMRS, UNISINOS, and FEEVALE. Currently, he is a faculty member at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage in Rio Janeiro; teaches curatorial courses at Despina in Rio de Janeiro; and collaborates with periodicals on art and visual culture, including: Select, Arte Brasileiros, Terremoto, Vogue, Urbe, among others. He was a member of the curators’ council for MACRS, Fundação Vera Chaves Barcellos, and FUNDACINE. De Souza is currently a member of the Advisory Board at Associação Cultural Despina in Rio de Janeiro.
