Translation:
My name is Nadín Ospina, I’m a Colombian artist, and I’ll talk about my work titled Pieza arcaica (doble yo), made in 1996. In this piece I explore the crosslinks and the interactions among the diverse cultures of the Americas, by way of a hybrid object that fuses the pre-Colombian past with images of North American entertainment culture, bringing into the present the hybridization and the mestizaje inherent in our own times of media shifts. This work is based on a piece from San Agustín culture, from the south of Colombia, a necropolis with mysterious ritual manifestations that fuse the images of the natural world with magical experience. The work was done in Mexico City by artisans who produce replicas of pre-Colombian pieces for that city’s Museo de Antropología. In my opinion, now more than ever, the work still speaks of a world of transcultural influences and the dynamic of displacements and fusions of contemporary societies with their encounters and clashes that generate just as many political problems as enriching fusions.
