Over the past few years, universities and museums have been turning away from the term “Colonial Art” to describe the art and artifacts made under the Spanish and Portuguese dominion of most of the Americas during the 16th–19th centuries. Increasing sensitivity to more nuanced accounts of Colonization (and those communities negatively affected by it) have made the term problematic, yet there is still no consensus for a replacement. We asked leading scholars and curators in the field to weigh in on the issue, and to express their suggestions and recommendations.
