Donation of Contemporary Artworks to the Fundación Museo Reina Sofía

The CPPC Donates 45 Contemporary Latin American Artworks to the Fundación Museo Reina Sofía

About the donation
The Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros (CPPC) has donated a group of 45 works from 33 contemporary Latin American artists to the Fundación Museo Reina Sofía. This donation will support the important research the Museum is conducting on the artistic movements that have emerged in Latin America from the 1960s to the present day.

The works, which will be given to the Reina Sofía to become part of their collection, belong to the chronological framework of the period between the 60s and the present, but there is a particular focus on the decade of the 1990s and the early years of the 21st century. This contemporary character is precisely what had been least represented in the Museum’s current collection of Latin American art, however, the works reinforce an interest of the Museum that was evident in its recent exhibition Ficciones y territorios. Arte para pensar la nueva razón del mundo (2016–2017).

The 33 artists represented—the majority from Brazil and Venezuela, though there are also artists from Argentina, Colombia, Mexico and Latinos from the United States—are generationally diverse and characterized by the cultivation of a wide spectrum of artistic practices: painting, sculpture, installation, graphic works, artist’s books and photo collage, among others.

The Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros made a previous contemporary art donation to the Museum’s foundation in 2018. This group of works focused on narratives of identity as related to gender, territory, memory and language.

The works that will now join the Reina Sofía’s collection largely consider materiality in artistic practice, with a conceptual stance that questions the use of techniques beyond those of creative production.

The artists represented in this donation are: Jaime Castro Oróztegui, Marcos Coelho Benjamim, Sigfredo Chacón, Paulo Climachauska, Eduardo Costa, José Damasceno, José Dávila, Danilo Dueñas, Iran do Espírito Santo, José Gabriel Fernández, Magdalena Fernández, Teresita Fernández, Héctor Fuenmayor, Rubens Gerchman, Fernanda Gomes, Alí González, Ester Grinspum, Arturo Herrera, Oscar Machado, Fabian Marcaccio, Roberto Obregón, Rosana Palayzan, Paulo Pasta, Nuno Ramos, Rosângela Rennó, Miguel Ángel Ríos, Maurício Ruiz, Valeska Soares, Edgard de Souza, Javier Téllez, Marcia Thompson, Angelo Venosa and Augusto Villalba.
