This catalogue accompanied the exhibition Behind Closed Doors: Art in the Spanish American Home, 1492–1898 that was held at the Brooklyn Museum (September 2013–January 2014) and traveled to The Albuquerque Museum of Art and History (February–May 2014); the New Orleans Museum of Art (June–September 2014); and The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida (October 2014–January 2015). As the first major exhibition in the United States to explore the private lives and interiors of Spain’s New World elite from 1492 through the nineteenth century, the show featured 160 paintings, sculptures, prints, textiles and decorative art objects from the Americas, Europe and Asia.
